Cannot change wallpaper in XP

Sunday, March 14, 2010

So you woke up this morning, and your desktop background is Blue, the Icons are there, on a solid blue screen. (Not to be confused with BSOD). You've gone to "Display Properties" numerous times, it seems to be "Froze UP", not allowing you to change your background. This is often caused by some Nasty spyware, or virus changing, adding or deleting one or more of your Windows Settings. So--How do you Fix It? Let's look in your Registry!

* Click on START, then RUN and type in- regedit-Hit OK

* Expand HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\Policies

Now there are two schools of thought on this procedure--if you find a folder titled "ActiveDesktop" or "Wallpaper" you may delete it or set the value to "0". I myself--just delete the folder.

* Now Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies

Once again your looking for a folder titled "ActiveDestop" or "Wallpaper"-Delete or change value to "0"

I have run across situations where I did not find these files and had to expand further beyond policies to system:

* HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\
System

Expanding further into system and finding the folder there is the same procedure as stated above.
