How to Fix: missing or corrupt system32\hal.dll

Saturday, March 13, 2010

Without a doubt the more you use your computer, the higher your chances of seeing error messages that effect the boot or start-up of your system. one of the more common messages is---

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\System32\hal.dll"
Please re-install a copy of the above file

I have used the following method on Windows XP and 2000 with success, using Recovery Console. You will need either your Windows CD to reach Recovery Console, or simply turning your computer on if Recovery Console was installed.

* Insert Windows CD and start your computer

*At the Welcome Screen you will type "R"(Meaning Recovery Console)

*Type the number of the instalation you wish to repair--usally "1" and press ENTER

*You will be asked for the Administrater Password, type it, and press ENTER ( Note--if a password was never set--leave blank and press ENTER)

*At the Prompt, type the following (Assuming C is your drive--if not--change it)

ATTRIB -H -R -S C:\BOOT.INI
DEL C:\BOOT.INI
BOOTCFG /REBUILD FIXBOOT

Remove your CD and restart your Computer.
